Voila! I now have a chain stay protector.
I used a strip of the old tube and then wrapped it all up with electrician's tape.
This blog is my evaluaton of the Motobecane Fantom 29 mtb from bikesdirect. Bikes from bikesdirect seem like a good value but there are few owner reviews on the web. Most comments found are from people who have no actual experience on Motobecane bikes. These commenters often advise against buying a bike online and going to your local bike shop (LBS). I do not work for Motobecane, bikesdirect or any other bike company. I am an engineer at the local power company.

Came by the way of mtbr.com forums, thanks for sharing your experience with this bike over the net.
I am looking for a cheap bike to send overseas to Japan, so I can ride while I am there during my yearly summer trip.
I will be keeping tabs with your blog to see how well it holds up as you lay down some miles!
